Abstract

This research aims to explore the role of interior design in improving the environment of correctional institutions, with a focus on Storstrøm Prison in Denmark as a modern case study that harmonizes security requirements with the humanitarian needs of inmates. The research problem lies in the fact that many correctional facilities prioritize security over addressing the psychological and social needs of inmates and staff, which exacerbates psychological distress, increases violence, and diminishes the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs.

The study highlights the significance of interior design in addressing these needs, using Storstrøm Prison as a model to examine the influence of Interior Design Elements such as lighting, ventilation, spatial organization, and the use of sustainable materials in creating a rehabilitative environment. The prison’s design successfully balances humanitarian considerations with security requirements, fostering positive inmate interactions and mitigating feelings of isolation.

Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, the research investigates the impact of environmental factors on human behavior, with a detailed analysis of Storstrøm Prison’s interior design. The findings underscore that effective interior design can enhance the daily quality of life for inmates, bolster their sense of dignity, and reduce rates of recidivism.

The study’s objectives include proposing design recommendations that integrate security with human-centric considerations and deriving actionable design standards from the analysis of Storstrøm Prison. The scope of the research is confined to this facility as a global exemplar.
