Taking Advantage of Opentype format to create Arabic Fonts inspired by Pen-Styles writings

Abstract

The forms of Arabic calligraphy have diversified, and each font has its own rules that control it. With the advent of the era of digitalization, the field of designing Arabic typographic fonts has expanded and branched out greatly, making creative people and those interested in this field compete in creating letterforms and creating new fonts.

The designer of typography needs a variety of sources from which to design the font, and among those sources are pen fonts, which were difficult to preserve their identity and the different relationships between the letters to each other when writing with them. New styles of Arabic letters that were known to be clearly weak, such as Thuluth, were drawn, and new names were assumed that had nothing to do with the original script. The weakness of the Arabic typographic fonts resulting from soft classical Arabic scripts (weakness of pen writing styles) was clearly demonstrated, such as: (Thuluth, Naskh, Diwani, Ruq’a..etc). Hence the research problem came to study how it is possible to take advantage of the OpenType format available in some computer programs to produce typographic fonts from the classic fonts known as pen fonts. The Opentype format has many characteristics that have widely served the needs of soft Arabic fonts and Arab designers in producing an elaborate Arabic font that has the flexibility and features associated with the font when writing by hand.
